Atestiguan los legajos de la historia de la ciudad, que el Templo que ahora se conoce, se edificó en la Edad Media sobre la mezquita árabe que existía en el mismo lugar.
Desde entonces, el actual edificio es fiel testigo de la historia de la ciudad de Alicante desde su enclave privilegiado en lo alto de la Villa-vieja.
A witness to Alicante’s history
Built on the site of the city’s former Great Mosque, the Basilica of Saint Mary has witnessed the history of Alicante throughout the centuries.
Historical records reveal that the church standing today was built during the Middle Ages on the remains of the former Arab mosque that once occupied this very site.
Since then, the Basilica has stood proudly in its privileged position at the highest point of Alicante’s Old Town, silently witnessing the city’s most significant events.

Comenzando su construcción en el siglo XIV, y habiendo sido modificada a lo largo de los siglos, Santa María es el resultado de los distintos estilos arquitectónicos que han acariciado sus piedras para labrar con singular belleza cada espacio interior y exterior.
Vestigios de la historia se esculpen en cada rincón, en las cicatrices de unos muros que han vivido cruentas batallas, dado cobijo a los fieles y en los que se han esculpido ricos capiteles para decorar sus arcos y portadas.
Construction began during the 14th century and continued over several centuries, giving rise to a building where Gothic origins blend harmoniously with later architectural styles, creating the unique character that visitors admire today.
Every corner bears witness to history. Its walls still preserve the marks of past conflicts, while richly carved capitals, arches and façades reveal the remarkable craftsmanship that has shaped the Basilica through the ages.
